The Bee Wrapt Story
We really wanted to remind people of life before plastic.Slowly began the idea of creating a protective wrapper for food, much like the old fashioned oil cloth but infinitely more attractive, hygienic and versatile.
Living on a lifestyle property in the foothills of Papamoa, Trudy says when they moved there fifteen years ago “there were already issues arising with the bee population in New Zealand and with the advent of varroa and other introduced diseases, it was becoming clear that Bees were going to require a lot more looking after than in the past if the world was to maintain a healthy and productive bee population. And by productive I simply mean fulfilling their natural role of pollinating our food source.” So it was with this in mind that Trudy’s partner Jonty became interested in beekeeping.
We really wanted to remind people of life before plastic.Slowly began the idea of creating a protective wrapper for food, much like the old fashioned oil cloth but infinitely more attractive, hygienic and versatile.
It all started as I was dipping cheese in beeswax to store and lengthen its life when I was selling cheese, bread and honey at a local night market. The bees make the wax to seal off their honey store from bacteria and keep the hive waterproof and free from bacteria and disease.
I was using beeswax because of the antimicrobial properties which discourage the formation of bacterial cultures. However the wastefullness of throwing away all that beeswax led to much experimentation. Slowly began the idea of creating a protective wrapper for food, much like the old fashioned oil cloth but infinitely more attractive and hygenic.
And so we created and perfected BeeWrapt. Beeswax IS the single best, all natural product for preserving food, but we cant all be boiling pots of beeswax in our kitchens- So we found a way for beeswax to be used and reused by anyone in the home setting. We infused cotton fabric with beeswax jojoba oil and native tree resins to keep the beeswax flexible and durable.
BeeWrapts make for a commonsense food storage solution, extending the life of Cheese , Breads and Vegetables. The Beeswax protects your food from fridge humidity whist allowing the foods to breath.
Practical Environmentally Friendly and Beautiful
Use the warmth of your hands to mold, shape and fold your BeeWrapts around food or bowls.
BeeWrapts are Breathable, Reusable, Compostable and Durable
Because the wax creates a waterproof membrane, BeeWrapts can be simply washed in cold water and used Over and Over.
I had been collecting fabric all my life, and the gorgeous colours and patterns Bee Wrapts are available in, will attest to this. It is these gorgeous, often vintage inspired fabrics that make BeeWrapts so much more than just food covers. They are practical, environmentally friendly and beautiful.
